A Biographical History of the Georgist Movement

“The grey heads and bald heads are in the majority. The problem that confronts those of us who want the torch held up in the future, is to fill up the ranks. In order to do that many things must be done, but we must not depend on the old or middle-aged. Somehow or other we must devise a way to reach the minds of the young people – when their minds are open, when they are ready for new truths.”

Mr. Rose, of Kansas City, Missouri (from a speech at the 1928 Henry George Foundation Congress, Chicago. Reprinted in: Land and Freedom, September-October 1928)

  • 1918 - Letter, Everyman, January, in which he wrote: "I believe The Great Adventure has not been understood, and that Single Tax has in a way befogged the real issue. ...Of course I want to open the land, but I would rather ten thousand times Open the Hearts of Men. So would Henry George if he were alive. I question very much if opening the land on political lines by politicians would do a great deal of good. It seems to me that greed would be there just the same. Singletaxers have been trying to open the land in a political way for twenty-five years or more -- they have got almost nowhere. It is n ot the length of the step, but the direction. When the hearts of men are opened, the land will be opened, so will the prisons be opened and a way will be opened to feed and clothe starving children and a way will be opened for our sisters to quit prostitution. Wilson's arm will be strenghtened, we will win the war and end its cause."
